Visiting David

These days are strange days where we all have to stay indoors due to the Covid-19 virus, so indeed visits are not happening much at the moment unfortunately.

But back in January, I did manage to visit David. He stands stoically in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. Michelangelo created him between 1501 and 1504. He is made of while marble which makes each detail carved by Michelangelo stand out even better. I particularly love the precise veins in his hand.

The Galleria is a nice small museum to visit. Besides the famous David, it has many lovely renaissance paintings, but my favourite room is the Gipsoteca Bartolini, in which many plaster models are exhibited, showing how the artists used these models to measure each detail before carving out in the precious marble. The models are much younger than David, most from the 19th century, but a great place to see how artists learned to sculpture in marble and to study fashion styles.

Stay well in these days.
